SWEECK THIRD OVERALL IN SUPERPRESTIGE SERIES

Belgian cyclocross superstar Laurens Sweeck, racing for Era Real Estate – Circus aboard his fi’zi:k saddle, finished fifth in Sunday’s fourth round of the Superprestige race in Gavere, Belgium. The result cements the 22-year-old’s third position in the overall standings. Mathieu Van der Poel and Wout van Aert took first and second in Gavere to consolidate first and second in the series standings.

‘It was all down to the law of the strongest,’ Sweeck admitted afterwards. ‘After the first lap I felt good but, soon after, Mathieu Van der Poel took over and there was no stopping him.’

Sweeck did indeed feel good on that first lap, taking the lead on the muddy descent to Grenier Castle. But on this overcast day, Sweeck, like the rest of the field, couldn’t live with Van der Poel who took the win by over a minute.

Sweeck’s fi’zi:k-riding teammates Michael Boros and Julien Taramarcaz finished 12th and 20th, respectively, while Laurens’ brother, Diether, also competing for Era Circus, crossed the line in 13th.

The next round of the Superprestige series takes place on 3 December at the Formula One racing circuit in Spa-Francorchamps.

Over in America, fellow fi’zi:k-riding cyclocross star Jeremy Powers (Aspire Racing) just missed out on victory to Curtis White at the Verge Northampton International cyclocross. Powers showed power and panache as he threatened victory for much of the race, before just losing out to White during the final throes of a fantastic event.

‘Right on the final bend, he got around me,’ Powers said about trying to hold off White. ‘I thought he was going to over-cook it in the last turn. I backed off a little bit because I thought for sure he was going down, but that’s how it goes.’

Fellow fi’zi:k and Aspire Racing rider Ellen Noble matched Powers’ second at the same race.
