Dennis and Scotson power to Aussie titles

fi’zi:k and BMC Racing got the Australian championships – and the year – off to a golden start thanks to Rohan Dennis (unmistakable in his golden fi’zi:k R3B Uomo shoes), who claimed time-trial gold for the second successive year. As defending champion, Dennis was last to roll down the start ramp and certainly made it count over the 40.9km course, unleashing a blistering 50:59mins. Dennis’ superb effort delivered him victory 58 seconds ahead of Burbridge in second and 1:38mins ahead of Ben Dyball.

But it didn’t feel as easy to Dennis as the figures suggest: ‘I knew I had an advantage with the aerodynamics into the headwind but you still don’t know how you are going to come back into the last ten if you are absolutely going to blow and I sort of did a bit to honest,’ he said after the race. ‘I was sort of lucky everyone else was feeling the same.’

And there was more success for fi’zi:k athletes to follow…

Australia’s Miles Scotson (R1B shoes, Arione R1 saddle and BMC Racing) made it a debut to remember on Sunday as he powered to victory in the Australian national championships men’s race. The 22-year-old upset the odds to beat twice national champion Simon Gerrans (fi’zi:k Antares 00 and Orica-Scott) into second and Dimension Data’s Nathan Haas (R1B shoes and Aliante VS saddle) into third. The victory sees Scotson join Gerrans and Jack Bobridge as the only Aussies to win both senior and U23 national titles.

‘I didn’t expect that I was going to have a day like today,’ Scotson commented after the race. ‘I didn’t expect that I was going to make 18 laps of the climb but on some of the laps – maybe not the last two – I felt like I was one of the strongest and everything just came together.’

Those 18 laps Scotson alludes to totalled 183km and saw a number of breakaways including a 10-rider move involving Stotson. The most prominent move, however, came from Cannondale-Drapac’s Brendan Canty), but with 10km to go the chase pack had reeled him in. Then with 1.5km remaining, Scotson surprised all by powering to the front. It was a position he’d never relinquish. Scotson will now wear the green-and-gold jersey throughout 2017.

Dennis and many of his fellow fi’zi:k riders now set their sights on the Santos Tour Down Under, which starts in Adelaide on Saturday 14th January.
