Talking to Andrea Dvorak, Twenty 16 Professional Cycling

How do you stay focused?

What I like about road riding and staying focused – as I came up through triathlon and perhaps why I don’t do as well in the individual time trialing – is that there is a huge team component; you can’t just check out. Anywhere from 4 to 7 other teammates are battling it out with you so you can’t lose focus. You’ve got 7 people relying on you and your particular role on any given day. As I also came from swimming, very individual, the team dynamic in cycling is like night and day, but in some sense much more fun than any individual sport.

Who are the women that have influential in your life, on and off the bike?

My mom has been a huge influence. She came over to the U.S. in ’69 from Czechoslovakia after the Russians invaded. So it was a big deal, as she escaped illegally, no one knew besides her father. She came over with no English, no money, nothing. My dad was already over here, legally. They got married within two weeks; didn’t return for 20+ plus years until Communism fell. Her whole family had suffered – lost their jobs. In the 30+ years that she has been in the United States, she has gone from no English, no money, to the National Medical Director for United Healthcare. In that span she has accomplished, what it takes generations to accomplish. So when it’s getting hard in a climb I think to myself, ‘suck it up’!

What advice would you give to young girls today with dreams of racing like you someday?

I would say to have fun and enjoy the experience. The bike has taken me a lot of places and I have been able to experience a lot of things because of it – I probably would not have met my husband if it wasn’t for the bike and been able to travel all over the world without the bike. So definitely enjoy it and live in the moment because it goes by fast.

If you could describe fi’zi:k in one word what would it be?
