Froome leads successful weekend for fi’zi:k riders

It’s only the first weekend of February but already the road-racing calendar is seeing fi’zi:k riders mounting the top step of the podium. Tour de France champion Chris Froome (fi’zi:k Antares 00) made it a successful start to his 2016 season, winning the Jayco Herald Sun Tour in Australia.

Froome unleashed a last-lap attack at the base of the 3km climb known as Arthur’s Seat to win not only the stage over Damien Howson (Orica-GreenEdge and fi’zi:k Antares 00), but also the race. Froome’s devastating kick carved out a 32 seconds lead over current leader and teammate Pete Kennaugh (fi’zi:k Antares R1), to give Froome GC victory over Kennaugh by 29 seconds.

‘We couldn’t have asked for a better week as a team,’ Froome said after the race. ‘Pete kicked things off early on, going into the leader’s jersey. And then winning today up Arthur’s Seat is a really, really nice way to end the week.’

Team Sky and fi’zi:k enjoyed further early-season success over in Spain with Wout Poels (fi’zi:k Antares VS Carbon) taking two stage victories of the Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana to win the overall title. Sunday’s fifth and final stage saw Poels finish safely in the pack to beat Luis Sanchez by 46 seconds and teammate Benat Intxausti (fi’zi:k saddles) by 56 seconds. Movistar’s Jon Izaguirre and Javier Moreno (both fi’zi:k Aliante) were fourth and fifth, respectively.

Finally, over in the UAE, fi’zi:k riders showed well at the Dubai Tour, with Juan Jose Lobato (Movistar and fi’zi:k Antares 00) finishing third overall. BMC Racing’s Silvan Dillier (fi’zi:k Arione R1) came fourth with teammate Philippe Gilbert (fi’zi:k R3B shoes) in sixth. Movistar’s Gorka Izaguirre (fi’zi:k) split the BMC riders in fifth.
